Dog Having FunCentral New Jersey is dog-friendly. In addition to dog parks and dog beaches (two very popular canine activities to be sure) the area has dog friendly restaurants, shopping, hiking trails, attractions, and dog friendly lodging at area hotels and cabins. There are over a dozen Halloween events catering specifically to dogs in New Jersey this October. What follows is a small sampling of what new homeowners can expect after moving to the dog-friendly Garden State. Here are some of the best dog friendly activities in Central New Jersey to enjoy with your best friend.

Dog Parks

Pennington Park: There are two dog play areas in Pennington Park, one for small dogs under 25lbs and one for large dogs over 25lbs. Each park has an agility course, water for dogs, and a gazebo with picnic tables for their people. The 120 acre park in Delanco, NJ also features an extensive trail network for bikers, hikers, and inline skaters.

Donaldson Park: This park in Highland Park, NJ opened in 1946 and is well known for both the dog park and boat ramp. Thousands of visitors enjoy the park every week. There are two fully fenced dog play areas, for small dogs and large dogs. The park sits along the Raritan River with 81 acres of recreational opportunities including paved trails and tennis courts.

Orchard Park: In addition to the fenced in open space, many dogs stretch their legs in the open fields and trail near the dog park at this Wall Township, NJ park. There is a walking trail that goes around the park and a large basketball court for people.

Dog Beaches

Asbury Park Dog Beach: Dogs can take a dip in the ocean and wiggle their paws in the sand at Asbury Park Dog Beach all year long. The dog beach is open to licensed and supervised dogs at all times from September 15th to May 15th and in the early morning and evening May 16th to September 14th. The city asks dogs to kindly stay off the dunes, to protect the beach. Dogs are also invited to take a stroll on the boardwalk (when properly leashed, licensed, and supervised) from September 15th to May 15th.

Island Beach State Park: Though not permitted on the swimming beach at any time, dogs are permitted on all nonswimming beaches and trails when leashed at Island Beach State Park. The pet-friendly island barrier comes highly recommended by BringFido.

Howl-O-Ween

Marty’s Place Senior Dog Sanctuary: At Marty’s Place older dogs without homes receive a home for life. They will be spreading the good word and celebrating the season with a Howl-O-Ween Family Fest K9 Costume Contest this year. The festivities include a K9 ghost walk, dog-friendly hayrides, puppuccinos, and a K9 sheriff demo. The costume contest will be judged by local pet salon owners. The event is scheduled for Oct 22nd, 2022 from 12:00pm-5:00pm. Admission is $5 (kids 6 and under free).

The Seafarer: In addition to being a dog-friendly bar and restaurant, The Seafarer celebrates in style every October. They will be having their 5th annual Howl-O-Ween celebration this October. The costume contest is free for dogs and their people. Prizes will be awarded for the scariest, funniest, and most original costumes.

Food & Drink

Yappy Hour: The Wonder Bar in Asbury Park, NJ is well known for great food, live music, and Yappy Hour! Dogs can make new friends and stretch their legs in the restaurant’s fenced-in outdoor space. There are designated times for dogs of all sizes and times specifically for small dogs. Visitors should check the Wonder Bar Yappy Hour FB page for scheduling updates. There are a number of rules and regulations to follow, and dog security is on duty to enforce the rules. “The $10 per person admission is donated to animal rescue groups and shelters”.

Shopping

The Hungry Puppy: Located in Farmingdale, NJ this premier pet food and supply retailer stocks over 12,000 different products. After stocking up with food, snacks, and chew toys at The Hungry Puppy your furry friend can enjoy a little well earned playtime at the free dog park. The park features playground equipment and toys. The park is sometimes used for training and private events. The store recommends calling before visiting the park.
